Improving Foundational Literacy and Education Equity in Bugisu Region

Shawin Mabiya

This project focuses on improving the quality of education and foundational literacy among primary school children in the Bugisu region of Eastern Uganda. It seeks to understand why many children attend school but do not achieve basic reading and comprehension skills, and to identify the gaps between rural and urban learning outcomes as well as environmental and socio-economic barriers affecting education progression.

I am interested in this topic because education is a key driver of opportunity, yet many children in my community are not gaining the skills they need despite being in school. This has motivated me to explore the root causes of poor learning outcomes and contribute to solutions that can improve the quality of education and create better opportunities for children.

The project will benefit primary school children in underserved and rural communities in the Bugisu region, particularly those from low-income households. It will also support teachers, schools, and local education stakeholders by generating insights that can help improve teaching and learning outcomes.
